COVID Update #5: Downsizing

COVID Update #5: Downsizing

by Vince D'Agostino

Hello everyone, We have some news to share. COVID has created an environment that is we feel is unsafe for a board game cafe to operate in, and we don't foresee things getting better anytime soon. We have chosen to temporarily downsize the store given the increasing COVID risk and the impact it has had on our business and the community. In order to be fully transparent with you all, I'm going to outline the changes as best we can here. Here is the 'bad' news: 1) We have put board game rentals on hiatus. Our collection is being held in storage for the time being. To put it bluntly, organizing people into groups indoors to play board games is an incredibly difficult challenge in the current landscape and we don't feel comfortable doing it for a long time. This is a long term change for the store - we don't expect to have board games for rent in the shop again for at least another 12 months. 2) We are no longer serving food or drinks. This one really sucks, as we loved being able to serve up some great drinks and snacks, but again the business model of having groups indoors right now is something that we want to avoid at all costs. Like the board game rentals, this is another long term change. We don't expect to be back in the food or drink business until at least the end of next year. 3) We will no longer be operating in the main storefront. For those of you that have been to our shop, we had two units in the building - the storefront unit and the playroom in the back where tournaments were held and additional seating was provided. We are now operating the store out of that back room. The new entrance to the store can be seen in the image of this post. We will have new signage up ASAP. 4) We are temporarily suspending in-store play (again). We tried for a few weeks to get commander tournaments running in the store and we ran a few Zendikar Prerelease events, but with the recent rise in cases we are going to sit back and wait for more information before moving forward with in-store play again. All of that being said, there is a silver lining here: 1) We are expanding our retail presence. We have been working tirelessly to get as much inventory as possible online for everyone - now that we are focused entirely on retail you should expect to see a lot more product depth, new product lines,  and features on our website in the coming months. In addition, there are some other media projects that we are excited to get to work on that will be announced in the future.  2) We are working to reduce the time you need to spend at the shop. The online store is a fantastic tool to ensure that your order gets processed ahead of time. This also includes buylists! By using the online store for your shopping needs and choosing to pick up locally, you help minimize the risk of COVID exposure for yourself and our staff, and we greatly appreciate those who are already using the website for their local orders. As much as we want to see you all right now, it's not the right time to be hanging out indoors if it can be avoided. We can't say enough how important your support has been over these trying months. In uncertain times like this having the Waypoint community stay involved and supporting us with your purchases has been a bright spot on a dark year. Again, this is just a temporary change. We aren't going anywhere - this is simply us adapting to the current climate. We look forward to when we can see you all in-store again. Until then, stay safe and stay tuned in to what we have in store!

Covid-19 Update #4 - Events are coming soon!

by BinderPOS Admin

Hey everyone! I hope your summer has been going well (all things considered). I'm sure this is an announcement a lot of you have been waiting for, but we are finally ready to start having a VERY LIMITED number of people in the store for tournament play! There are obviously going to be a bunch of new protocols in place to account for the current situation we find ourselves in, and we appreciate your patience and consideration as we slowly and safely bring our operations back to scale. I want to give a quick run-through on how event signups and in-store play will look like for the next while. Signing up for an event Every event will be available to sign up for online through our website. You can check out our calendar at the bottom of the homepage to see our event schedule. This is the only way to enrol in an event. We will not be accepting walk-ins for any of our events. We will start with 4 person commander pods, and slowly grow into 8-person prerelease events for Zendikar Rising and drafts. If you are interesting in playing in any of these events, you have to use the online event ticket submission to enrol.  If you would like to sign up as a group for an event we are more than happy to provide support for that. Send us a message on Facebook to coordinate a time and place for you to play in-store!   Playing in an event There will be several tweaks to your in-store experience when we get the ball rolling with events. Our store has two rooms - the retail room and the tournament room. Your event will be assigned to one of these two rooms. For those unfamiliar with the store, a staff member will aid you in finding where your tournament will be located. These rooms are completely separated and isolated from one another and have separate entrances from the street, meaning those playing in one room will never be in contact with those playing the other room. In addition to this setup, there are some rules we will be enforcing regarding in-store play: You must wear a mask at all times. If you feel the need to take your mask off, we ask you to step outside for some air. If this policy is not respected we will ask you to leave. If you are feeling any symptoms of COVID-19, stay home! If you have already signed up for a tournament we will provide a full refund.  Hand sanitizing is required before the start of the tournament and between rounds (if applicable). Both rooms have washrooms and hand sanitizing stations will be available.  Your seating will be assigned. Because you are signing up for the event before it starts, we will have assigned seats for you as you enter the tournament space. Your opponent is not entitled to shuffle your deck. We understand that this is problematic, but we hope the community will not take advantage of this to try and cheat. If you feel like the integrity of your match is compromised, a staff member will assist in randomizing your opponent's deck for you. All tournament results will be submitted digitally. Whether it is through Wizards EventLink or through a message to the Facebook account, you do not need to (and are not allowed to) submit tournament results to the front desk. We are trying to minimize the amount of moving around that occurs in the store. We will use your provided e-mail address if needed to aid in contact tracing. We sincerely hope (and firmly believe that if the above protocols are honored) that we won't have to use this step, but if need be individuals will be contacted if a player is discovered to test positive for COVID-19 I know that this is a lot of information to take in, but as I'm sure you are all experiencing in your day-to-day lives this is the new normal we are living with. Again, our staff thanks you for staying diligent on keeping yourself, us, and your play group safe.

Covid-19 Update #3 - We're (sort of) Open

by BinderPOS Admin

Hey everyone, Been a while since I checked in. I want to give you a status update on what is happening inside the doors at Waypoint and how we are trying to further accommodate you all through this pandemic. Given the state of affairs in Hamilton, we have decided it is safe for us to reopen for retail purposes only. What does this mean? 1) Our inventory is back in the shop and you can now head over and make on-site purchases 2) Our play area is still closed. This includes tournaments and board game rentals in-store. 3) Masks are mandatory. We will have masks available to those who cannot provide one for themselves. 4) Social distancing measures are in place. There is a maximum number of patrons at one time and proper distancing must be kept at all times. 5) We will not be serving hot drinks or food. We will have cold beverages available but for the time being we are pausing on serving coffee, tea, or snacks.   We will be open 3 days a week. Fridays from 3-7, Saturdays from 12-4, and Tuesdays from 3-7.   If you'd like to browse the store at an alternative time, feel free to shoot us a message and we can arrange an appointment.   Thank you so much everyone for your continued patronage! We really appreciate your patience through all of this.   Vince
